What are all these modes on my camera?

SO MANY OPTIONS!

It was so overwhelming when I fist got my camera, all I saw was a bunch of buttons and settings and modes and…

I think you get the point.

I started writing about the different modes and going in-depth about each of them when I realized there is no need for that, it’s really simple. All you have to know is that there are different settings which are split into three sections: auto, scene, and the P, S, A, and M section, which I will talk about here.

TELL ME ABOUT THE MODES

If you are still using the auto and scene modes then get out of them now and switch over to the other section before anyone finds out. In the auto and scene settings, the camera basically does everything for you, all you have to do is hit that big ass button. The other settings allow you to control nearly all aspects of the camera.

Let’s start off with what each of those letters stand for:

M – Manual
S – Shutter-Priority
A – Aperture-Priority
P – Programmed Auto

I didn’t want to bore you with long paragraphs about it so I decided to make a chart, which will be much easier to understand. Check it out!

Mode

Who controls the
Aperture?

Who controls the
Shutter Speed?

Now, isn’t that easy? You don’t have to sit here and read about me explaining it when you can just look at this simple chart. If you ever forget what mode does what, feel free to come back here.

Manual is the best to use since you can control both the Aperture and Shutter Speed and get the shot exactly how you want it.

WHAT ABOUT CANON?

The images of the dials on the chart are from a Nikon camera, which is what I have. If you have a Canon, then your letters will be different. Here is what the letters are on a Canon:

M – Manual
Av – Aperture-Priority
Tv – Shutter-Priority
P – Programmed

You can still refer to the chart if you have a Canon but just remember the different letters, as yours are different from what’s shown.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS

Now that you know what the different settings are and what they do I want you to go out and try them to see how changing Aperture on Shutter-Priority changes the Shutter Speed and vice versa.

I think the chart makes it is easier to understand but I want to know how you feel about it. How did you like the chart? Should I do more of those? Or just ditch them? Comment below and let me know.

I like the charts, they’re simple and descriptive. I think you flipped what controls what in the shutter and aperture priority modes though.

Ah good eye! I didn’t even notice, thank you for that! And I’m glad you like the chart, I’ll make sure to do more of those in the future.

FYI chart is blank in Chrome browser?

Hmm that’s weird, I’m using Chrome as well but I can see it just fine.
